  auspicious art

This is a kolam I made for a Long Island workshop led by three teachers I studied with in India last winter. Kolams are like temporary welcome mats. Drawing this was my way of honoring these women for whom I have so much respect. [Kolam is an auspicious art of decorating courtyards and pooja rooms/prayer halls in South India drawn mainly by women and girls. Some women use rice flour to draw a kolam, which is the traditional medium to be used while others use sandstone or limestone powder. I used rice flour and corn starch to make this one.]
